You will see the most well known Galapagos wildlife such as sea lions, iguanas, tortoises, and blue-footed boobies. The remote islands tend to experience less impact from travelers so they are more pristine and they occasionally offer wildlife that is seldom found in the more central islands. For example, the islands of Fernandina and Isabela on the far west are known as the best areas for whale watching and for seeing large numbers of sea turtles. These are also the only islands on which the flightless cormorant can be found. The island of Genovesa (Tower), in the far north is one of the only islands where the red-footed booby is commonly sighted.
Coco Island is located off the shore of Costa Rica , and it is one of the National Parks of Costa Rica. Located in the Pacific Ocean, it is approximately 340 mi from the Pacific shore of Costa Rica . With an area of approximately 9.2 mi², about 5×1.9 miles and a perimeter of around 40 miles, this island is more or less rectangular in shape. Surrounded by deep waters with counter-currents, Coco Island is admired by scuba divers for its populations of Hammerhead sharks, rays, dolphins and other large marine species. The extremely wet climate and oceanic character give Coco Island an ecological character that is not shared with either the Galapagos Archipelago or any of the other islands in this region of the world.
The ideal destination for adventure travelers, Costa Rica is filled with plenty to see and much to do. Biologically intense on land as well as underwater, Costa Rica offers nature lovers the perfect environment to view a plethora of wildlife species in their natural habitat. Massive schools of fish, an amazing array of marine life and an ideal water temperature throughout the year, has meant that scuba diving conditions in Costa Rica are near perfect.
Just 10 yards beyond the waters edge, the reefs remarkable ecosystem offers an amazing profusion of unusual tropical marine life in 20’ to 140’ of calm clear water. In the shallow areas you will see peacock flounders, octopus, needle fish and turtles. As you dive deeper over dense coral growth you will see puffers, moray eels, parrot fish, lobsters and even sea horses.
If you think that Bermuda is a beautiful island above the water, you have to take the plunge and experience a whole new world of wrecks and marine life. Bermuda's reefs are the northernmost in the Atlantic, and the winter water conditions are surprisingly benign for a destination so far north. Water temperatures range from 70 - 80 degrees in the summer, going down to the mid - 60s in the winter. Visibility in the winter is superb with 70 - 100 feet visibility extending to 150 - 200 feet on a good day.
Australia is one of the most unique areas of the world for diving. The Great Barrier Reef offers divers some of the world’s greatest dive experiences. There is also excellent diving in the temperate waters of the south of Australia as well as Tasmania . Plentiful marine life can be found around the Solitary Islands off northern New South Wales , popular Byron Bay near the Queensland border, and the fabulous Abrolhos Islands on the west coast off Geraldton. Liveaboard or land based diving, Australia has it all.
Papua New Guinea, or "PNG" as it is called by the locals, is a land of variety and contradiction. The country possesses some of the best dive spots in the world and many divers are aware of that now. Deep or shallow reefs, coral walls, sheer drops, barrier reefs, atolls, passages, lagoons and wrecks (many of them W.W.II wrecks), all with a unique variety of species, are found throughout the region.
Palau offers you the world's most beautiful tropical paradise. Famous for its diving, Palau is rated as one of the world's best diving destinations by scuba aficionados. And why not...Palau has unspoiled reefs, caves, and walls with the most amazing array of marine life you can ever imagine.
Indonesia is the hottest dive destination on the planet, thanks to superlative diving. The Lembeh Straits are renowned for muck diving. Perhaps no more diverse marine life exists anywhere than that around the Raja Ampat islands, offshore Irian Jaya, which shares the same landmass as Papua New Guinea.
Truk Lagoon, as it is most commonly known by divers (it is officially spelt Chuuk) has become one of the best places on the planet to visit for wreck divers. It served as a Japanese military and naval base during the Second World War, and would often have over a thousand ships moored in the lagoon at any one time. The deep waters (reaching 100m) of Chuuk combined with the circling barrier reef and high islands provided excellent protection allowing the Japanese to develop it as the greatest stronghold in the Pacific.
The diving in St. Vincent and the Grenadines is relatively unknown, yet the islands' reefs offer a diversity and density of life and underwater terrain found no place else in the Caribbean. St. Vincent offers fields of pencil corals, brain corals the size of cars; star corals stacked one upon the next. Dense black coral forests and meadows of giant sea plumes welcome divers to explore. Reefs are healthy and alive. Among the corals, sponges of all colors, gorgonians and a profusion of Christmas tree and feather duster worms fill the gaps while schools of small chromis, creole wrasse or boga pass by in endless streams.
The diving off Dominica is as rich and varied as its topside attractions, from volcanic vents spewing bubbles and hot water, to submerged volcanic craters with dramatic vertical walls, and gently sloping shelves of coral and sponge. The sands of Dominica are predominantly dark to black, this tends not to reflect light and gives the impression of very dark deep water, this is not the case in many areas. The deep waters off the island also draw in big pelagics from time to time on all sites, so make sure to look up once in a while, you never know what's out there, whale sharks, dolphin, and on occasion a pilot whale.
Guadeloupe lies south of Antigua and north of Dominica. It is a French-speaking island and diving is only average. Among the best dives are the Islets Piedgeon, cone-shaped, coral-covered islands that fall to the bottom at 160', and La Sec Patê, a group of large boulders rising to about 40' below the surface. Dives are done on the Atlantic side, around Frégate, Toc Vert, Groopers, Grenadiers, and Coco islands. Swim among groupers, tarpons, sharks, turtles, stingrays, eagle-rays, lobsters… in this volcanic relief offering caves, arks, tunnels, covered by gorgonians, multicoloured sponges, and coral reefs.
With so many beautiful reefs to choose from you can choose the best site for the conditions and your diving ability. Visit playgrounds for tropical fish and slow flying sting rays with depths from 17 to 70 feet. Grottos, overhangs and crystal blue water make an ideal habitat for tons of tropical, pelagic and reef fish. Occasional turtles and sharks add to the wonderment. Picture frame swim throughs and billows of coral make for wonderful dives.
The British Virgin Islands are a collection of over fifty islands, of which only sixteen are inhabited. The main islands are Tortola, Virgin Gorda, Anegada and Jost Van Dyke. Descend from your boat onto a coral encrusted plateau at about 30' (10m). From there swim over the plateau lip and descend into a maze of shadowed overhangs, narrow passages and eroded coral. This is but one of the many dives that you will experience while diving in the British Virgin Islands.
Puerto Rico offers a magnificence ocean temperature of 81ºF and underwater visibility averages from 60 to 75 feet near the beach. Offshore it is easily 100 feet or more! There are countless diving sites around the Island. The most exciting dives are made near Desecheo Island off Rincón, off Mona Island, 50 miles west of Mayaguez, and off Culebra and Vieques. For snorkeling, the shallow reefs near San Juan, Dorado, Mayaguez and Humacao are perfect. Readers of Scuba Diving magazine have named Puerto Rico as one of the Top Five Destinations for Shore Diving in the Caribbean/Atlantic region.
Providenciales (otherwise known as Provo) is 37.5 square miles and is the most developed of the Turks and Caicos Islands, with a variety of resorts, excellent restaurants, and modern amenities. 6000 foot vertical drops to some of the deepest parts of the ocean. Turquoise reefs run into big blue drop-offs around the entire perimeter of the Turks & Caicos Islands. At this intersection of the turquoise reefs and big blue wall drop-offs nature abounds!
The Dominican Republic's underwater world offers exceptional reef diving and snorkelling, incredibly clear waters and a variety of colourful marine life. In fact, the country is often listed as one of the top diving locations in the Caribbean. Visitors can explore centuries-old shipwrecks on the country's north coast, or take advantage of the warm, protected waters of the south.
Jamaica is widely know for it's world class scuba diving and snorkelling. Expect to see rays, sharks, eels, and a huge variety of colourful fish. The fabulous variety of marine life in Jamaica's crystal clear water has kept visitors from all over the world going to Negril. There are also many other incredible dive sites throughout Jamaica, including many in Montego bay, Ocho Rios, Runaway Bay, and Port Royal.
Trinidad, the southernmost island in the Caribbean chain (it's actually south of Caracas) isn't for divers, but its smaller sister to the north is.... Diving from resort hotels along the southwest coast of Tobago is inferior to the diving to the north, where you'll find huge coral heads and good fish life, with mantas common in the spring. Strong currents and choppy water make this a place for experienced divers.
The Islands of The Bahamas offer an array of dive experiences like no other destination in the world. There are sunken Spanish galleons, inland blue holes, caves and forest-like coral reefs, teeming with marine life. Some of the most exciting experiences allow enthusiasts to swim and feed reef sharks, an experience offered nowhere in the world except The Bahamas.
Barbados has reefs that runs east to west (rather than the usual north to south of the Barrier reef system on the west coast) that are separated by corridors of white sand approximately 50-100 feet apart. The fish life is outstanding and includes large rays, barracuda, parrotfish, schools of bermuda chub, creole wrasse, and trigger fish, along with outstanding coral and barrel sponge formations.
Diving in Aruba is famous for the spectacular shipwrecks and interesting coral formations that dominate Aruba’s underwater realm. This includes the 400 foot Antilla wreck - the largest wreck in the Caribbean. Aruba’s waters are rich in exotic marine life, including stingrays, moray eels, manta rays, barracudas and yellow tail.

Curacao was born millions of years ago, developing under the sea from lava rock on which coral has grown for centuries. For millions of years reefs have surrounded the island, attaching to the shore like a narrow fringe. In some places they are like beautiful gardens, with delicate corals and are home to brightly coloured tropical fish. In others, massive coral formations extend into depths with deep-water fish patrolling the plunging walls.

Diving within the waters of the most beautiful lagoon in the world is on many divers’ “must do” list because of the abundance of large marine life. It is common for divers to be joined by legions of gigantic manta rays gliding gracefully within arm’s reach while schools of black-tip reef sharks parade through the sunlit waters - a classic manta ray "swarm site." It is also called “Manta Ray Channel” or "Manta Ballroom" for its regular encounters with these gentle giants. Snorkelling is also enjoyed above the site.
The scuba diving around Moorea is not limited to diving the lagoon; the open waters of the deep sea are just outside, wherein the majority of the most popular of Moorea's dive sites are located. Lots more interesting and amazing sea creatures await your discovery, including sea turtles, larger and ever more species of fishes such as barracuda, tuna, jackfish, red snapper, napoleon fish, surgeon fish, impressively sized moray eels, trigger fish, various rays, dolphins, numerous species of sharks such as the black tipped, grey, and lemon, among others, and the migrating humpback whales during the months of August through October!
